It is usually used to play back music, but can also be used to play back other types of audio files, such as podcasts or radio broadcasts. There are a variety of audio players available, both free and paid. The most common type of audio player is the desktop application. These applications are available for most major desktop platforms, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Unix-like systems.

The first MP3 player was the SaeHan Information Systems’ MPMan in 1998.  It could play back only MP3 files stored on a CD or its internal memory.  Its rechargeable batteries allowed users to take their music with them. In 2001, Apple introduced the iPod, which could store up to 1,000 songs on its internal hard drive.  It was not the first portable digital audio player, but it was the most popular and helped to popularize the format.
