Tanjore Paintings

Tanjore Painting is a process of decorating wooden doors and walls with Indian ornamental designs. The first stage of tanjore painting includes the creation of an Indian painting board. Once the board is ready, a rough sketch is created with the highlights – center stage, outer border, jewelry, ears, neck, belt, etc. Then more stones are placed in designated areas.

Elements Used In Tanjore Painting

Now a medium is used to mix paints on the board using a cloth. A special dry rub mixture of oil and lemon is rubbed on the surface of the Tanjore painting and allowed to dry for some time. The mixture then gets painted using the oil and lemon mixture. After that, another dry rub mixture of gold foil and powder is rubbed on the walls and allowed to dry. Finally, dry paints are brushed onto the wall or boards, and finally, a very gold finish is given to the entire Tanjore painting by rubbing gold foil on the various points of the drawing.

Now another paste is used for decorating the walls. This paste consists of different kinds of paints and glues and is quite thin so that a huge area gets decorated with one paste. Once this is done, the next step is to apply the sketch on the wall by using the dry rub or Tanjore painting. After the paint is dried, it gets covered with the Emery paper, and the final stage is to cover the entire painting with white glue.

Tanjore paintings are made by following certain simple steps. The first and foremost step while decorating with Indian Tanjore paintings is to prepare the canvas. Before starting the painting job, the canvas should be cleaned and made free from any foreign substance. After cleaning it properly using a brush and rags, the canvas is ready for the job.

One of the best tools to start with is the sketching tool. This tool is very useful for beginners and experienced artists as they can erase and add new sketches very easily. Various kinds of pens and pencils are also available in the market for this purpose. But before using the various kinds of tools, the artists should practice making perfect drawings. In this case, the artists used different colors of chalk, which give different shades to the sketches.

To get the best results, the artists need to make some excess paste and apply it over the picture’s surface. Once done, they need to apply the excess paste and smooth it using a cloth. After smoothening the surface, they have to make another paste and then place the picture on the cloth. They have to apply a small amount of white glue to the tanjore painting and then dry it for a few minutes. The final process involves making a brush and adding white glue to get a smooth finish on the canvas.
