Scott Cawthon designed FNaF. The first game in the series was launched on August 8, 2014, and it quickly acquired popularity.
The primary series comprises of nine survival horror video games set at “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza” after its animatronic bear mascot. Five nights at Freddy’s Youtooz in most games, the player is a night-shift worker who must use security cameras, lights, doors, and vents to defend against animatronic enemies. At children’s parties, life-size animatronics perform. The guard is tasked to observe the animatronics at night. The player must use a range of gadgets to defeat animatronics. In Five Nights at Freddy’s, the player may operate their office’s security doors to block animatronics. The player’s nightly power supply depletes quicker when tools are utilized.
If the power goes out, the player is vulnerable against animatronics. Five nights at Freddy’s Youtooz 2 features no protective doors; the player must utilize an empty animatronic head and flashlight. The game featured a music box that must be remotely wound to avoid an animatronic assault. After death, 8-bit mini games are randomly played.
In the first, second, third, seventh, and eighth games, a security camera views animatronic characters. One place at a time is seen, and certain sections aren’t viewable. Most camera feeds are drab, black-and-white, and noisy. In the third game, failing systems disable cameras. In the fifth game, cameras are only utilized in the false ending and custom night update.
Fifth game lights are installed on a control pad and illuminate animatronics’ chambers. In the second and ninth games, the flashlight has a limited battery life, while in the fourth and seventh games, it’s endless. Eighth game battery life varies.
The Five nights at Freddy’s Youtooz fifth game’s flash beacon helps players navigate the third and fifth nights’ pitch-black chambers. The flashlight is also utilized in the sixth game, but it’s automated and has infinite power.
Doors must be closed while an animatronic is approaching in the first, fourth, seventh, and eighth games. Same-function doors appear in the fifth game’s phoney finale and custom night update. Vents are used by animatronics in the second, third, sixth, seventh, and eighth games. In the fifth game, they’re the player’s main mode of transit.
Every main series game ends with a jump fright as animatronics assault the player off-screen.
Most jump scares include an animatronic figure and a loud scream or roar. These jump scares, notably those by Golden Freddy (in the first game), Nightmare, and Nightmarionne (in the fourth game), generally crash (or restart) the game. Each game requires the player to utilize tools to avoid jump scares.
5NaF3’s “Happiest Day” mini game in the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth games, the player receives access to (mostly eight-bit) Five nights at Freddy’s Youtooz minigames following dying or accomplishing a mission. Minigames frequently tie cryptically to a game’s plot or event.
The second game’s minigames depict crimes recounted by a restaurant worker and how animatronics gained life.
Third-game minigames demonstrate spring trap’s genesis. The fourth game’s minigames depict a character’s terrible death. Fifth game has one minigame depicting William Afton’s daughter’s death. Sixth game minigames portray Afton-related events. In the seventh game’s mobile edition, “Princess Quest” shows Vanny’s beginnings.
In the first, second, third, seventh, and eighth games, a seasoned worker calls the player. The messages explain gaming mechanics and the location’s background. First-game phone calls may be heard as background in the fourth game. Fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth games Five nights at Freddy’s Youtooz contain AI tutors. The sixth game has a tape recorder that explains game concepts.
Each game has Easter eggs and uncommon screens that contribute to the tale. Examples include Golden Freddy in the first game, eight-bit minigames in the second and third, random things beside the bed in the fourth, blueprints in the fifth and sixth for harry and david promo code, and Princess Quest in the seventh.
The player’s location shuts after the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth games. In the first game, the site closes due to a “long-ago tragedy.” The second game, animatronics breakdown. Games 3 and 6, fires close areas. In the sixth game, Circus Baby’s Pizza World shuts before the events due to a gas leak.
Five Nights at Freddy’s was published for Windows on August 8, 2014, followed by Android and iOS adaptations on August 27 and September 11. A Windows Phone version was also published, however its visuals were downgraded. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, 3, and 4 were published on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch on November 29, 2019.
The first game five nights at Freddy’s Youtooz follows Mike Schmidt, a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where animatronics move at night and load people into spare suits to murder them. The animatronics’ “free-roaming” mode is designed to prevent their servomotors from freezing up. 12 to 6 a.m.

Cawthon announced a sequel following the original game’s release.
He issued a sequel teaser a month after the first game’s release and continued to do so until its release. The October 21, 2014 video included additional animatronic figures and no doors.  Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 for Windows was released on November 10, 2014, ahead of schedule. 13 and 20 November 2014 saw Android and iOS ports. A Windows Phone port was dropped for poor graphics. November 29, 2019 saw the release of PS4, XB1, and Switch ports.
