shutters blinds and shades

Unique windows can be quite the attraction in a house. In large houses especially, different rooms may have different types of windows. One will have to customize the window treatments to suit the window shape, but one can never go wrong with shutters, blinds, and shades when trying to dress up a quirky type of window. Some of the most challenging windows to dress up, and yet commonly present in most houses are skylights, large windows, and arches because they mostly have limited space for mounting. Here is a list of window treatments with shutters blinds and shades for 5 types of windows.

1.    Large Windows

Large windows, especially south-facing or east-facing ones give plenty of sun, light, and breeze. Wall-to-wall windows also give a feeling of space in the room. As we approach summer, these large windows will become a source for overheating the room, and the harsh UV lights can damage the furniture and cause the carpets to fade. Roller and solar shades are the best choices for these windows. Motorized vertical blinds are also a great alternative as watching them glide to a corner when the blinds are opened fully looks exquisite. Shutters are a classic addition for window coverings for large windows and give a country feel to the room. For large windows, minimalist treatment with blinds, shutters, and shades are a great alternative for a clean finish.

2.    Bay Windows

Bay windows are a classic addition and can be added to any room of the house to create a cozy nook looking over the garden or the street. The angles of the bay window make it a perfect corner to create a sitting area with the windows surrounding the one from three sides while the fourth side opens to the room. They are found in cafés and restaurants too as a prime sitting area. When one says bay window, windowpanes with plantation shutters spring to mind and these are apt window dressing for this space as one can close or open the vanes to the right degree for privacy, proper lighting, and let in some cool breeze.

Due to their varying flush mount depths, it is difficult to measure bay windows and thus, it is recommended to go with cellular shades or roman shades if not plantation shutters. If the bay window has double-hung windows, then one can attempt a combination of blinds, shutters, and shades, choosing between blinds and shades to go with shutters.

3.    Windows with limited mount space

Where there is limited space or no mounting space inside due to lack of depth, then an outside mount may be required. In such spaces, one can install woven or roman shades or horizontal blinds. Both these choices can be selected in other materials or textures to suit the needs of the room. For instance, if the room is west facing, then one may want to choose sheer shades to let in natural light and breeze to keep the room cool.

4.    Arched windows

Arched windows look very elegant and whatever window dressing you choose among blinds, shutters, and shades, their shape must remain untouched. In fact, the window dressing can be layered to accentuate the window shape. So, you can add wood shutters or cellular shades or layer the two with a unique blend of colors and designs. You can also opt for plantation shutters on two sides and shades on the middle window or vice versa as a highlighting feature.

5.    Skylights

With their clear view of the skies in any weather, skylights add a magical touché to the room. However, during summers, skylights tend to overheat the room, and covering them is very tricky. Also, when the rain pours heavily, the windowpanes will make loud pattering noise and during the winter the panes will get frosty and make the room cold. To achieve the perfect covering for skylights, choose window shades with solar protection lining. Also, it would be preferable to automate the operation of the shade so that you can remotely control its opening and closure.

No matter which window dressing one opts for between shutters, blinds, and shades, look for functionality, ease of operation, and design to complement the room.
