SS 321 is a grade in which the details are significantly important. It handles heat better than standard 304 and resists sensitisation, but only if produced and tested to the right standards. This guide covers what to check before placing an order with any 321 stainless steel sheet manufacturers.

Understanding SS 321 and SS 321H Stainless Steel

What is SS 321 Stainless Steel?

SS 321 is an austenitic stainless steel grade. The key difference from 304 is titanium stabilisation. Titanium prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, which matters in applications exposed to temperatures between 425 and 900 degrees Celsius. It bonds with carbon before chromium does, keeping chromium available for corrosion resistance. This is why 321 is preferred for heat exchangers, exhaust systems, and furnace components.

Differentiating SS 321 and SS 321H

SS 321H has a higher carbon content, between 0.04 and 0.10 %, resulting in better creep resistance and strength at elevated temperatures. For continuous service above 600oC, SS 321H stainless steel plates are the better fit. For use up to around 850 °, standard 321 works. Mixing up these two in procurement causes problems in pressure vessel and aerospace applications.

Key Material Properties and Specifications

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition is the first thing to verify through the mill test certificate. Carbon is capped at 0.08 percent max, manganese at 2.00 max, and silicon at 0.75 max. Phosphorus should not exceed 0.045 percent and sulfur 0.030 percent. The chromium content is between 17.00 and 19.00%, and the nickel content is between 9.00 and 12.00%. These two provide most of the corrosion and oxidation resistance. Titanium is what most buyers overlook. It should be a minimum of 5 times the combined carbon and nitrogen content, with a hard ceiling of 0.70 percent max. If titanium is at the lower end and carbon on the higher side, the stabilisation may not hold up in service. Always look at both figures, don’t just look at one.

Mechanical Properties

At 0.2% offset, the tensile strength of SS 321 sheet in annealed condition shall be a minimum of 515 MPa, and the yield strength shall be a minimum of 205 MPa. The elongation should be at least 40 percent on a gauge length of 50mm. These are the baseline figures. Confirm them through the mill test certificate for each heat or lot. Do not accept verbal confirmation.

Adherence to Standards

ASTM A240 SS 321 sheets are the standard for flat-rolled stainless steel. If a supplier cannot confirm that their material is produced to ASTM A240, it is a bad sign. For pressure vessel or aerospace applications, ASME or API requirements may also apply. Confirm which standards your project requires before sourcing.

Surface Finish and Dimensions

The SS 321 sheet surface finish affects both performance and application fit.

  • No.1 finish is hot-rolled, annealed, and pickled. Standard for industrial use.
  • The 2B finish is cold-rolled with a smooth matte surface. Suitable for most fabrications.
  • BA finish is bright annealed, for applications needing a reflective surface.
  • No. 4 finish is brushed, for visible or architectural applications.

Fewer contaminants are trapped in smoother finishes, and that is important in corrosive environments. Regarding dimensions, check thickness tolerances before cutting, specify hot-rolled or cold-rolled, and for thicker plates, check the mill of origin if the application is pressure-rated.

Quality Assurance and Documentation

Manufacturer Certifications and Test Reports

  • Ask for the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) confirming chemical and mechanical properties for the specific heat of the material.
  • For third-party testing, confirm the lab holds NABL accreditation or equivalent recognition.
  • Every coil or plate should carry a heat number tracing back to the original mill records.
  • Do not accept photocopied or unverifiable certificates.

Traceability and Origin of Materials

  • The heat number on the material must match the MTC exactly.
  • Ask about the country of origin and the mill.
  • For critical applications, some end-users require material from approved mills only.
  • Ask directly if the material is prime grade. Prime or secondary material is sometimes sold without clear disclosure.

Applications of SS 321 Stainless Steel Sheets

Heat Exchangers and Furnace Parts

Heat exchanger shells, furnace linings, and radiant tubes are made of Grade 321 heat-resistant stainless steel sheets. Titanium stabilization is more reliable than 304 for continuous heat exposure.

Aerospace Components

Exhaust components and firewall panels use 321 for heat resistance. Full mill certification and strict traceability are mandatory for aerospace procurement.

Chemical Processing Equipment

Reactors and storage tanks handling corrosive media at elevated temperatures may use 321 sheet. Resistance to sensitisation after welding is the key advantage.

Expansion Joints and Bellows

Industrial stainless steel 321 sheets have more resistance to thermal cycling than unstabilised grades. The bellows manufacturers specify 321 or 321H, based on the maximum service temperature.
