boost routers performance

Wi-Fi connection problems are some of the few issues we face at our homes or workplaces, and we know how frustrating that is to spend another minute without being connected or being off from our work.

Although there’s a whole load of problems arising out of poor Wi-Fi connection, we won’t get into that, but what we can tell is how you can get your Wi-Fi connection or router fixed and get it back in the ‘game’ without replacing and spending money on a new one.

A reboot is a simple route.

Many of the routers available in the market come with their pre-installed app or have their web interface, from where you can always try to reset your connection. But if you have a router without those apps or the web interface, we’ve still got you covered.

All you have to do is turn off your router, wait for a minute, and then switch it on. Most of the time, the connectivity gets fixed, although this is not a solution at any means but still simple and has a fair amount of chance of getting your Wi-Fi back into action.

Switch The Channel

Most people don’t know this, but Wi-Fi routers use radio signals to send and receive data. Thus, they use radio frequencies, which are often divided into several channels. So, it is always recommended for a very crowded place to change the frequency channel since most people use the same track, which results in poor connectivity and more traffic.

Most of the market routers now have auto frequency channel selection, which means the step will not be as effective as people who have old routers (particularly 2.4 GHz with a single band) with a manual selection of channels.

Switching And Monitoring The Qos Settings

Routers that are available now in the market usually have Quality of Service (QoS) settings, which determine the types of network traffic gets priority. QoS makes sure that high priority things, which vary from network lag like live streams, browsing, etc., get higher priority than downloading activities that are not much impacted by network lag.

So, to change the QoS settings of your router, you will have to login into the router’s app or website and check if the QoS settings are enabled or not. If this doesn’t solve the problem, then manually prioritize what you don’t want to be disturbed by the network lag. Some routers also have settings to prioritize devices using the devices’ MAC address so that you can do that too for your laptop or phone.

Updating Your Router Software

If the above steps don’t work for you, consider updating your Wi-Fi router’s firmware. There are instances when bugs in the firmware block the smoothness of the connectivity and performance. Thus firmware update is the only reliable thing you will have to do in this case.

Now, how to update your router depends on your router’s company, and there are always steps given in the user manual of the same. However, generally, you have to login into your router’s app or website and go to the administration section, where the ‘firmware upgrade’ option is usually present.

Change The Location Of The Router At Your Place

Well, we have come very far to this solution, and that means the above resolutions wouldn’t have worked for you, but changing the location of the Wi-Fi router at your place could also be a good idea to get good connectivity.

So, if you want to get a more reliable solution, consider moving the router to someplace central at your place and make sure it is free from too many surrounding barriers. That means you have to ensure that there aren’t too many obstacles, such as walls, cupboards, metal cabinets that can absorb Wi-Fi signals.

The best place for your router would be somewhere on the ceiling of your home since it will be higher from the ground and will be free from surrounding obstacles.

Adding A Range Extender

Now we know you have tried everything and understand your problem and don’t want you to be frustrated anymore. If your IP address is 192.168.1.200, feel free to use this guide for login password and details. Now that all the above steps are not working for you, it is recommended that you get yourself a Wi-Fi range extender, which is also known as Wi-Fi boosters in the market.

A range extender is like an extra Router, but it is not a router. It boosts the Wi-Fi signal without creating any new network, as the way the signal repeater does. So, when you go out to buy the range extenders, make sure you don’t buy the repeater; thus, checking the packaging carefully would be great for you because Wi-Fi extenders work quite well than repeaters.
