bis certification

In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issues BIS certification. It works as proof confirming to the buyers that a product is genuine, reliable, and safe to use. The BIS is engaged in a number of processes such as certification, standardization, testing, hallmarking, etc.

The BIS has established eight Central, four Regional, and three Branch laboratories in India to examine product samples during preliminary and surveillance activities.

The government encourages BIS certification for products for the reasons mentioned below:

  • It protects the health of the community and is responsible for certifications of quality.
  • It protects consumers from harmful products.
  • It enhances the portion of customers’ faith in their preferred brands.

BIS accreditation for products is optional. However, the Indian government has made it necessary for some products to protect public health. According to the official statement, BIS certification is mandatory under Scheme 1 for 380 products.

Let’s look at several types of BIS certification schemes –

  1. Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme
  2. BIS Certification Scheme
  3. BIS Registration Scheme.
  4. BIS Hallmarking Scheme
  5. Eco-Mark Scheme

Under such schemes, the certification is awarded. The manufacturer is advised to carry the documentation required, before applying for BIS certification.

Documentation required for obtaining BIS Certification –

The documentation varies according to the category of the BIS registration scheme. However, the general essential documentation that a manufacturer must submit to the BIS to get BIS certification is as follows:

Name and address proof of office –

  • Required documents include a certificate from the firm’s registrar
  • Certificate from the Directorate of Industries
  • Certificate from the industry center
  • Memorandum of articles.

Name and Address Proof of Factory –

  2. Authorized representative letter, signed by someone other than the firm’s CEO.
  3. Manufacturing process flow chart
  4. Manufacturing machinery list
  5. Whether manufacturing operations outsourced?
  6. List of Testing Equipment
  7. Are there any test arrangements made outside the factory area?
  8. A copy of the calibration certificate if available from NABL authorized.
  9. In-house reports
  10. Third-party laboratory test reports by Indian standards, where relevant
  11. Layout The factory layout shows the office, lab, storage room, manufacturing area, and completed goods storage.
  12. A copy of the test certificate for each raw material.

The above-mentioned are the primary documents required for BIS certification. Make sure you have all of these before applying for a BIS certificate.

Importance of proper documentation

Proper documentation is vital for certification because it guarantees that items satisfy the needed requirements and contributes to the quality, safety, and dependability of the products.

Legal compliance –

To legally sell some items in India, makers and importers must first register with the BIS. Failure to register can result in legal consequences such as fines and product confiscation.

Trust and Reputation –

BIS accreditation opens up the company to better consumer acceptance and reputation.

Quality Assurance –

BIS certification assures that items fulfill quality and authenticity requirements. BIS certification lowers the chances of fires, explosions, acute/chronic health risks, and environmental impact by affording market credibility to the finished products.

Environmental protection –

BIS certification reduces environmental concerns by restricting the use of specific chemicals and materials.

conclusion

The successful grant of a BIS certificate after an audit and inspection of your product will provide the following benefits –

  • Ensures quality standards as BIS registration products are bound to follow a certain standard while manufacturing the goods.
  • Gives authenticity and high quality to BIS-certified products as they deliver high-quality performance and reliability.
  • These products reduce environmental impacts since BIS has banned certain chemicals and materials in products with BIS certifications.
