Frankfurt, Germany, has so much to offer… However, many visitors depart with an incomplete picture of the city and its culture. I’ve lived in Frankfurt for five years and believe it’s one of the nicest cities in Europe to live in. Plus there are hundreds of cool things to visit in Frankfurt. These are just a few of my particular choices. Frankfurt is not the easiest city to become acquainted with. There are many activities to do in Richmond, my hometown in the United States, but I have found many in Frankfurt.

1. Höchst
Frankfurt’s Altstadt (Old City) and city core garner a lot of attention, yet many people fail to go beyond that. I could recommend Bockenheim or Bornheim, but Höchst is Frankfurt’s true hidden treasure. This Frankfurt district boasts a calm and walkable old city. The Denkmalschutz, a law that has been defending old cities since 1972, protects the timbered, historic buildings. One of my favorite things to do in Höchst is to visit the Schwanheimer Düne, a nature reserve with animals and flora found nowhere else in Germany.
2. Tumult Café
Tumult, a new addition to Frankfurt’s coffee scene, is a café that also serves as a workspace, yoga studio, and, get this, an escape room. The interior design is handmade and one-of-a-kind. The coffee is delicious. And the staff is warm and friendly. This café has become a favorite among Frankfurt’s specialty coffee enthusiasts, and it receives beans from some of Europe’s greatest roasteries. Tumult Café is at Moselstraße 4 in the Bahnhofsviertel neighborhood of Frankfurt, close to the central railway station.
3. Bahnhofsviertel
Bahnhofsviertel is Frankfurt’s grittiest and edgiest neighborhood, and it has experienced several contentious alterations in recent years. While gentrification has been a big topic in Frankfurt, many of the new enterprises have been fantastic complements to the city’s culinary and entertainment scene. Bahnhofsviertel is also home to Frankfurt’s Red Light District, and some parts can be unsavory at night… But, if you stick to the population and main streets, it is a must-see when in Frankfurt.
4. Craft Beer from Kiosk 45
And once you’ve purchased that beer, take it to a nearby park and enjoy it. Germany allows public drinking (but be responsible and clean up after yourself!) This benefits bottle retailers, especially those placed near parks. Kiosk 45 features the best selection of craft beer in Frankfurt, with a large walk-in fridge to keep the beers foamy and ready to drink. Günthersburgpark, a local favorite, is nearby. Kiosk 45 is at Wiesenstraße 45 in Frankfurt Bornheim.
5. Friedberger Platz Weinmarkt
Do you dislike beer? Not a problem! Every Friday, Friedberger Platz transforms into a social gathering centered on delectable wines. The event takes place every Friday after work and lasts until roughly 8 p.m. Local wine vendors arrive, and everyone sits or stands around to socialize while indulging. Summers are busier than winters, but this is still an excellent area to visit if you want to experience some local culture in Frankfurt.
6. African Queen
There is a sizable Eritrean population in Frankfurt, and many of them have started their restaurants and cafes over the years. African Queen is Frankfurt’s top Eritrean restaurant. The proprietor used to be a famous musician in Eritrea, and even the President of Eritrea eats there when he comes to visit. There are vegetarian options (I always have a vegetarian plate). African Queen is at Stuttgarter Str. 21 in the Gutleutviertel neighborhood of Frankfurt, close to the Hauptbahnhof and the Main River.
7. Markt im Hof
Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., a courtyard market in Sachsenhausen opens on the other side of the river. Since its start in 2013, this market, named Markt im Hof, has been a creative meeting of international food, beverage, and goods merchants, and it has become one of Frankfurt’s best-kept secrets that tourists are unaware of. Don’t worry, you can also discover some fantastic Hessen specialties there. This is without a doubt one of the greatest weekend activities in Frankfurt.
8. Konsti Market
After leaving Markt im Hof, proceed to Konstablerwache, a central square in Frankfurt, for the Konstablerwache Markt. This farmer’s market, which takes place every Thursday and Saturday, brings in fresh goods from all across the Hessen region, including local beer and apfelwein. There are also vendors offering cheese, meats, and a variety of regional specialties, such as Handkäse mit Musik… a fermented cheese topped with onions and vinegar that people either love or hate. There’s also fresh Grüne Soße and Ebbelwoi, two Frankfurt favorites. The Konsti Market is a Frankfurt institution and a must-see if you’re in town on the weekend (or Thursdays when it’s quieter).
9. Germany’s Largest City Forest
Inside Frankfurt’s Stadtwald, or city forest, you can find quiet and leisure. Frankfurt’s Stadtwald is Germany’s largest inner-city forest, located near Frankfurt Airport yet accessible from the city via a street tram. The forest is 48 square kilometers in size and forested, with various routes that are ideal for riding bikes, exercising, or strolling through. The Stadtwald features nine ponds and six playgrounds, making it a popular destination for families.
10. Fleming’s Club
Fleming’s Hotel is near Eschenheimer Tower. If you take the lift to the top floor of Fleming’s, you will arrive at Fleming’s Club, a restaurant and bar. You now have one of the most famous vistas of the city, one that few people are aware of. This vista combines the ancient and new in the city, emphasizing its differences. Order a beer, eat some beer snacks, and gaze out the window over the splendor of Frankfurt. Fleming’s Club is at Eschenheimer Tor 2 in Frankfurt’s city center.
