For almost two years now, I keep having the same talk in my office. It repeats again and again. Someone comes in. They already researched. They know about Semaglutide. Maybe Tirzepatide too. They are interested. You can see it clearly.
But then. The hesitation comes.
There is always a “but”.
“But I heard it messes up your stomach.”
“But isn’t this only for diabetes?”
“But I don’t want to depend on it forever.”
Most times, the thing stopping them is not a real concern. It is something they heard somewhere. Social media. A friend. Someone who “tried it once” and had a bad experience.
So let’s go through the biggest myths. Slowly. Honestly.
It’s the easy way out
This one, honestly, is frustrating.
I have seen patients who tried everything. Not one thing. Everything. Keto diets. Fasting. Calorie counting. Hours in the gym. And still, weight comes back.
Again and again.
Not because they are lazy. That idea is just wrong. Their biology is fighting them.
This is not my opinion. This is how the body works.
GLP-1 medications work with hormones your body already has. These hormones control hunger signals. Fullness. Blood sugar.
In many people, especially long-term weight struggles, that system does not work properly anymore. The medication helps fix that signal.
That’s it.
We don’t say blood pressure medicine is “easy way out”. We don’t say insulin is cheating. So why here?
Using a medical tool for a medical issue is normal. Nothing lazy in that.
They are only for people with Type 2 Diabetes
This confusion is common. And understandable.
Yes, these medications started for diabetes. That is true. But medicine changes over time. Now, some of these drugs are officially approved for weight management. Not experimental. Not off-label guessing. Proper studies. Thousands of people tested.
Also, something important people forget.
Obesity is a disease.
It has genetics. Hormones. Environment. Many factors. It is not just “eat less”.
So treating it with targeted medication is not extreme. It is logical.
And sometimes, early treatment prevents bigger problems later. Like diabetes. Like heart disease.
The side effects are unbearable
If you only look online, you will think everyone is suffering badly.
That is not what happens in real practice. Yes, some side effects can come. Nausea. Maybe constipation. Some bloating. Usually early stage.
But the extreme stories? Mostly for two reasons.
Either dose increased too fast.
Or no medical guidance at all.
Some people just order online. Start without advice. Eat heavy greasy food right after. Then I feel terrible.
Of course they will.
The proper way is different. Start low doses. Increase slowly. Adjust food habits in the beginning. Then usually, side effects are mild. And temporary.
What stays longer has benefits. Better energy. Less joint pain. Improved sleep. Clothes fitting differently. Lab results are improving.
Some people cannot tolerate it. Yes, it happens. But that is true for any medication.
One bad story should not cancel everything.
You have to stay on it forever
This fear is very common.
People imagine lifelong injections. It scares them before they even start.
Let’s be clear.
Some patients stay long-term. That is okay. Just like cholesterol medicine. Or blood pressure treatment.
But not everyone stays forever.
Many use it for a period. They lose weight. Their hunger signals improve. They build better habits.
Then slowly, under guidance, the dose is reduced.
The problem happens when there is no support. No plan. No follow-up.
People stop suddenly. No structure. Then weight returns.
That is not failure of medication. That is a poor process.
You can eat anything and still lose weight
It would be nice. But no.
GLP-1 medications reduce food noise. That constant thinking about food. Cravings late at night. Eating even when full.
This part is powerful. Life-changing for many.
But the medication does not choose your food.
If someone eats low-quality food only. Junk. No protein. No nutrients. They may lose weight, yes. But also lose muscle. Feel weak. Become unhealthy.
I still need proper nutrition.
Protein matters. Vegetables matter. Movement matters.
The difference is, now it becomes easier. You are not fighting your hunger all the time.
The part people don’t talk about enough
Medication alone is not everything.
It helps a lot. Especially in the beginning. But it is one piece.
The other piece is guidance.
Someone who understands your body. Adjusts dose when needed. Look at your lifestyle. Helps build a real plan.
And stay there. Not just the first month. But months later too.
Because after the excitement phase ends, real work starts.
If you are still unsure
It is normal to feel confused. There is too much information. Too many opinions.
But if you have struggled with weight for a long time. I tried many things. And nothing stayed. Then at least have a proper conversation.
Not a sales talk. Just real discussion.
Ask questions. Share concerns. Get honest answers.
Then decide.
That’s all.
