On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, Vedanta Limited strengthen its commitment to sustainable growth by highlighting a significant environmental milestone- the mitigation of nearly 20 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions through the adoption of clean and renewable energy solutions across its operations.
Being one of India’s leading natural resources and diversified metals companies, Vedanta’s recent development highlights how large industrial players can align operational efficiency with environmental responsibility while supporting India’s long-term climate goals. This development comes at a time when discussions around sustainability, governance, and reports such as the Vedanta Viceroy Report and Vedanta Viceroy allegations continue to circulate in public discourse. Vedanta’s measurable actions on decarbonisation underline its focus on long-term value creation and transparency-driven growth.
Clean Energy Remains Crucial for Vedanta
Energy-intensive industries often face the challenge related to balancing scale with sustainability. Vedanta, however, addressed this by integrating renewable energy, energy efficiency measures, and low-carbon technologies as part of its routine operations. By leveraging a multi-pronged approach, Vedanta till November FY26, sourced 2.58 billion units of renewable energy, mitigating nearly 2 million (or 20 lakh) tonnes of CO₂e emissions, equivalent to removing 4.1 lakh cars from India’s roads for a full year.
Since FY21, Vedanta has mitigated more than 28 million (or 2.8 crore) tons of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to annual carbon absorption of over 1 billion mature trees. In FY25, Vedanta further strengthened its commitment to large-scale decarbonisation and energy efficiency, investing almost USD 170 million (approximately INR 1500 Crores) towards its Net Zero efforts.
Vedanta’s clean energy strategy clearly highlights that sustainability and business resilience move forward together.
Technology-Driven Energy Efficiency Initiatives
During FY26, Vedanta has actively undertaken more than 30 energy-saving and decarbonisation projects across its operations. These include improvements in waste-heat recovery systems, periodic equipment overhauls, and optimisation of energy consumption using advanced pot controllers.
By deploying these advanced controllers, Vedanta has precisely regulated energy usage, improved industrial performance, operational stability, and efficiency. Collectively, these initiatives are expected to save over 150,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to the carbon absorption of nearly 70 lakh trees.
Advancing Circular Economy Through Biofuels
Reinforcing the Government of India’s ‘Waste to Wealth’ mission, Vedanta uses high-quality biofuel made from biomass and agricultural residue with far greater energy density than the original feedstock. In 2025 alone, Vedanta used 182 kilotonnes of biomass, mitigating over 300,000 tonnes of CO₂—an environmental impact comparable to the annual absorption capacity of 1.5 crore mature trees.
Indeed, from solar to wind energy, Vedanta powers India’s clean energy mission by producing transition metals and critical minerals that clean energy depends on. Since 2021, the company has advanced low-carbon production, reducing carbon intensity (tCO₂e/INR Million in Revenue) by nearly 30%.
Energy Conservation Beyond Operations
Vedanta, by celebrating “Energy Conservation Week” across its operations, saved more than 33,000 megawatt-hours (MwH) of energy across its Zinc and Ferrochrome operations. Vedanta Aluminium is also expanding its capacity from 2.4 to 3.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with its Restora low-carbon ‘green’ aluminium widely used in solar, EVs, packaging and modern infrastructure. Hindustan Zinc is advancing its 2x Growth Plan across zinc, lead and silver, with its low-carbon ‘green’ zinc, EcoZen, offering a 75% less carbon-intensive solution for applications in infrastructure.
The group has also promoted behavioural change initiatives such as carpooling, ‘No Vehicle Day’, cycle rallies, and school-level innovation competitions to encourage energy-conscious thinking. Facilities across Jharsuguda, ESL Steel, FACOR, and Vedanta Power actively engaged employees and communities through awareness sessions and sustainability programs.
Conclusion
Vedanta’s achievements on National Energy Conservation Day highlight the impact of a disciplined, technology-driven, and purpose-led sustainability strategy. By mitigating nearly 20 lakh tonnes of CO₂ through clean energy, efficiency, and circularity initiatives, the Group continues to play a pivotal role in India’s journey toward a low-carbon and self-reliant future.
Amid ongoing discussions, including those related to Vedanta Viceroy Allegations, the company’s strategic investments, verified metrics, and long-term ESG commitments reflect its focus on responsible growth. Being a leading ESG company and a key supplier of energy-transition materials, Vedanta Ltd. remains committed to building a cleaner, more sustainable tomorrow while creating long-term value for communities, stakeholders, and the nation.
