we often get asked how to design an appropriate headstone or gravestone for the person they cherish. People approach us because they want to design something handmade to honor the loved ones they cherish. But, they might be overwhelmed or have many ideas, and when we work with them, we come up with something distinctive and well-designed. It could include a traditional headstone or something that is more modern, and the style will not be based solely on the personality of the person to be honored but also on the place of the cemetery or churchyard. The key is creativity, and because we hand-carve, our designs are unique.
Part 1: Questions about Headstone Design
These tips should hopefully help answer the most frequently asked questions on headstone design.
1. How do I select the appropriate size for the headstone?
The form of the inscribed determines the width and height of the headstone. We don’t have “off the self” blank headstones. Instead, everyone is precisely cut to the correct size. It is why it is essential to consider the initial before the form.
2. Is a simple headstone design ok?
Simple is fine. And you should try not to use obvious words, such as “in loving memory”. The simplest rocks are the most stunning and profound.
3. What are the guidelines and laws? Do I have to wait for my design to be accepted?
The majority of our designs for headstones have been rejected due to the fact that we adhere to the rules set by the cemetery or churchyard. Most vicars actively encourage and favor a handmade headstone, even if it is a little out of the rules. The most important aspect is to be in active dialogue with the vicar and cemetery from the start to avoid disappointment later.
4. Do designs for hand-carved headstones have to be extravagant?
Not at all. Because the gravestone is hand-crafted doesn’t mean it has to be distinctive and “artistic”! Sometimes all you need is some elegant lettering and spacing with a basic design such as the one below. If, on the other hand, you have a more detailed and intricate design in your mind, it’s also fine, but it’s all about providing you with a choice.
5. What elements influence the selection of design?
When looking at headstone designs, the overall feel and appearance are entirely up to the person commissioned to design the stone. The factors to be considered include the following:
The stone’s location
The location of the stone, as well as other headstones that are already in place in the area. For instance, would you like your headstone to be distinct or blend into the followings:
- The content
- The shape
- The material
- The character
After a few debates about the content, size, shape, and materials, It is crucial to talk about the characters. The text may have to appear formal and straight or even capitalized. Sans serif fonts create a more contemporary look. Italics and flourishes look more casual.
Whatever the personality the stone has, the current trends should be avoided, and the style of lettering must last for a long time.
The stone will mark your grave over a lengthy duration, so timelessness is essential.
6. What’s the headstone’s shape?
The form of the headstone chosen for a design is likely a personal choice. A client may like to imitate an existing headstone, which blends in with the surroundings, or design something that will stand out. We generally steer clear of the “off-the-shelf” top of an ogee since it’s over-used, and we prefer an easy, shallow curve. The primary purpose of its top part is to allow surface water to flow off, which is why I prefer the curvature of the top. If an all-around top is preferred, it is possible to fill in the area with a carving, and the shape can be dependent on the design; for instance, if a carving is not required, then a narrower curvature is more suited.
How long will the design of the headstone be?
Once you’ve met with headstone companies, They typically create a concept or series of drawings within the space of a week. Most of the time, you’ll be satisfied with the initial concept, particularly if they’ve been able to brainstorm a variety of concepts during the workshop. On other occasions, this will be the beginning of a lengthy back-and-forth process where they alter the design as necessary until you’re completely satisfied. Sometimes, this involves returning to the beginning, only to start again with a completely new design. Since every headstone we create is unique, each one takes time. A period of four up to 6 months are the minimum, and it is usually an 18-month or longer wait until the time you place your order. However, don’t feel guilty for having to mark the grave that is not marked; other people will be more aware If you made a mistake poorly in the midst of a rush!
