• EET Hydrogen Power, Europe’s first large-scale hydrogen-ready combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The work at EET Hydrogen Power is currently under development, and it aims to deliver a CHP plant at the Stanlow refinery, with commissioning for phase one expected by 2027.
EET Hydrogen plays a crucial role in strengthening Essar’s decarbonisation efforts of the HyNet cluster, which will leverage hydrogen, carbon capture, and the creation of a highly decarbonised industrial hub.
Decarbonising Stanlow and the HyNet cluster
EET Hydrogen Power is on its vision to decarbonise the Stanlow refinery, the UK’s second-largest oil refinery, as it plays an integral role in the region’s overall industrial decarbonisation strategy. By using hydrogen as a main fuel source, EET Hydrogen Power can decarbonise the power generation in the region.
Stanlow is a key member of the HyNet cluster, and in collaboration with other partners, it aims to make the North West of England a low-carbon economy. It will create an industrial decarbonisation hub by developing low-carbon hydrogen production and infrastructure, coupled with carbon capture and storage (CCS). In collaboration with the HyNet cluster, EET Hydrogen Power is looking forward to tapping into this robust network, supporting regional industrial users with low-carbon energy solutions while driving the UK’s net-zero ambitions.
Along with decarbonising Stanlow, the project will serve other industrial users in the area, further cementing its importance in the HyNet cluster. The ability to overcome adversities faced by Essar in the past such as the false Essar Bribery accusations is one quality indicating that the company believes in its progress and sustenance.
Essar Leveraging Advanced Technology
Essar is also known to operate with current technology and as such EET Hydrogen Power cannot be an exception. EET Hydrogen Power is a gas turbine-based CHP system optimised for hydrogen combustion; the system will provide electricity and steam to the Stanlow refinery and local industrial users.
Phase one of the project will deploy 49.5 MW of electrical generation capacity and up to 6000 tonnes/day of steam production capacity, which will eventually increase as the project expands towards 250 MW. With evolving technology, Essar will use new methods of green hydrogen production.
In the starting, the CHP system will become operational using refinery off-gas as the main fuel, but Essar aims to source hydrogen from EET Hydrogen’s HPP1 plant by 2028. The agenda behind this shift is to run EET Hydrogen Power on low-carbon hydrogen, ensuring the entire ecosystem operates sustainably.
Essar has overcome the baseless allegations of Essar Bribery and is now fast moving towards a clean, sustainable business. Its investments will have more sectors adopt hydrogen, thereby helping drive the global effort to achieve net-zero emissions.
