electric cars in india

The Indian market for EVs is expanding rapidly. The rise of fuel costs, the growing consciousness of the EVs emission, and the government’s support towards electric vehicles are influencing both manufacturers and customers. Range, charging facilities, price, features, and after-sales service are important considerations for electric vehicles. Below are five electric cars that currently rank among the best, or will soon rank among the best, in India, the Audi A4 Electric being the first.

1. Audi A4 (Electric Version)

As of now, Audi A4 is not available as an electric model in India (it only offers petrol versions). Nevertheless, Audi has announced that the A4 will be available as a fully electric model in the future.

Assuming that the A4 fulfills Audi’s promised standard, I expect A4 to fulfil the expectations as stated below:

Luxury & build quality: Audi’s reputation is based on the quality of its premium interiors, the refinement of its rides, and the detail on every premium console. The A4 Audi is promised a cushioned and quiet ride, an advanced infotainment system and top tier console materials, and an attention to detail on the driver assistance.

Performance: Electric Audis usually offer a seamless charging experience, and combined with the high outputs expected of the A4, I presume the A4 will offer high torque and quick acceleration.

Considering its battery technology, it should provide a decent range, rapid charging alternatives, and excellent safety measures.

2. Mercedes-Benz EQS

As one of the top long-range EVs in India, EQS offers luxury, range, and comfort in one package. Its range is a whopping 857 km (ARAI certified) on certain trims.

As far as EQS features, there are high-end luxury features, fantastic ride comfort, advanced driver aids, and luxurious interiors.

For a price, EQS is on the premium side, well above with many mainstream EVs. But the price is worth it if the budget allows.

3. Kia EV6

For considering style and performance on a budget, the Kia EV6 is very attractive. Its range is over 700 km for some trims, and it has a futuristic design with strong features.

For considerations, premium trim cost is high and EV charging and servicing are still catching up to the market.

4. Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai has globally impressed with it’s Ioniq 5 and in India, range, comfort and design has helped it as well.

It’s a strong option in the premium-evolution segment as it has spacious interior, modern battery technology and has over 600 km in range on the top variants.

Disadvantages: Higher upfront cost; maintenance and components might be more expensive; charging facilities are still being developed.

5. Tata Nexon EV

For many buyers in India the sweet spot can be found in the combination of the price, range and features. Tata Nexon EV delivers that sweet spot.

Price: It is more affordable as Tata Nexon EV is an electric vehicle compared to luxury import vehicles.

Range: Present models range of ~312 km (ARAI certified).

Features & Usability: Cabin space, service and charging options, decent tech.

Overall value: Real cost of ownership is lower than premium models and the real world range is sufficient (for many daily drives). It is for those who want the cost saving advantages of an EV.

Conclusion

For available vehicles, Tata Nexon EV is the value pick while the others to consider for range and luxury are Mercedes-Benz EQS and Kia EV6. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is there for the design and the Audi A4 Electric is there for aspiration as it is not available. With the above guide, you can compare te vehicle and make your decision accordingly.
