A major reason for WordPress’ popularity is the convenience it offers to users. You do not need to write code or hire a professional for conducting many tasks. They can be easily done through plugins or simple tricks which are not too technical. One such task is to set up multiple domain mapping in WordPress. It is used when you want multiple URLs that are located elsewhere to link to your primary website. Many people run multi site installations which are a collection of more than one website operating on a single WordPress installation. The process helps such users map all the domains to a single page. In this tutorial, we will discuss how to do the job easily through a plugin.
Who Needs Domain Mapping?
Domain mapping is used when you need to point multiple domains to a single URL. Let’s say you convert HTML to WordPress theme. Now, you want to retain the old URL instead of shifting to a new one because of the SEO value of the existing domain. You can simply map the old link to the new website to resolve the issue. Some users, especially business owners, acquire multiple domains which are usually variations of the same term. Well-known brands use this strategy so that even if people misspell their name, they will arrive on their website. Domain mapping will be helpful for their purpose too. In case, a user is running a campaign wand for a few days wants all visitors to be sent to a specific landing page. This means that even if someone requests the homepage, she will be sent to the landing page instead. The user can map all the URLs of his website to that specific landing page. The process will also come in handy when you make changes like adding an SSL certificate to your interface. All the old “http” domains can be mapped to the new “https” one.
How To Map Domains In WordPress?
We will now discuss the process to set up multiple domain mapping in WordPress. Like most things in the CMS, this can also be done using a plugin. Following are the steps which you can use to conduct the process:
Install A Suitable Plugin
Access the admin dashboard of your installation through your username and password. In the menu, locate the option called Plugins and go to Add new. On the screen, you will see a search box, where you must type Multiple Domain Mapping on Single Site. This is the plugin we will be using in this tutorial. You will be presented with a list of search results when you press enter after typing the plugin’s name. Use the image given below to locate the correct option in the results.
Press the Install Now button visible with the plugin. All the files of the tool will be downloaded and installed on your website. A plugin will not work on an interface unless it is activated. Click the Activate plugin link in the success message displayed after the completion of the installation.
Add The Page To Which Domains Will Point To
We will now add the page to which all the domains will be pointing to. In the control panel menu, click on Pages and then choose the Add New option. The Gutenberg editor will now open where you will have to add the name of the new page. Enter a name of your choice for the new section. In the menu on the right-hand side, you will see a section called Permalink. Make sure the URL in the URL Slug box is just as you want it to be.
Save all the modifications and proceed to the next step.
Map The Domains To The New Page
We will now map all the domains to the new page which we created in the previous step. Go back to the admin dashboard and locate the Tools section in the menu. In it click on the Multi domain option. This will open the settings screen of the plugin. In the first tab called Mapping, you will see fields for entering the URLs. in the first field, enter the URL that you want to map and in the second provide the URL created in the previous step. In case you are confused, look at the bottom of the boxes, where their purpose is clearly mentioned. The message under the first box reads Enter the domain you want to map. Similarly, under the second box, the message is Enter the path to the desired root for this mapping. Hit the Save Mappings button at the bottom of the screen to complete the process.
This is a simple process to map multiple domains to a single page in WordPress websites. If you have a large number of URLs that you want to map, then it would be better to contact a WordPress website development company which will do the job more efficiently.
