If you are a small business owner, you must be aware of how important it is to create a company website with the help of a professional web developer.
I have been working as a web developer for many small businesses and have noticed that most business owners have nearly no idea how web designs work to attract audiences. They insist on adding elements which they think is apt, literally ignoring expert opinions hence I have listed below a few design aspects that small business owners do not really understand about and need to learn in the near future;
1. Insisting on Adding Too Much Content:
Most companies I create websites for, want me to add as much information about their company as possible on the home page which means the pages become too long and fully loaded with the content which ultimately confuses the audience as to where should they concentrate as the page is full of distraction. The purpose of the homepage in business is to make your services clear to the audience hence let the page focus on that rather than putting up all information possible for the site.
2. Underestimating the Significance of White space:
Another issue that is common with web development for small businesses is that the small business owners consider white spaces on the site as an incomplete site and insist on filling every area of the page with some elements. White space is not bad, in fact it is really good. A web page should not be filled with multiple elements but just some content and rest should be left blank so that the users can read the primary content without getting distracted. White space on which text is added also gives a nice contrasting background for the page.
3. Ignoring to Update Content:
Many business owners get a nice website built and then just leave it as such without updating it frequently. The information on the website needs to be updated or else the pages will become irrelevant after a while and search engines will rank your site lower. So, if you hire a developer to build a site, also include website maintenance and update clause in the contract so that your website is always up to date.
4. Not Interested to Spend on Website Security:
Most companies I work for takes the security of the site seriously, but many small business owners do not consider security as a priority and are not interested to spend much to secure the data. As per the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR or DSGVO), it is important for the website to protect user data and handle data carefully. Hence, make sure to invest in protecting the user data by securing the site.
If you run a small business, you must be a pro in your field but the same cannot be said when it comes to your knowledge of the web development field hence when you hire a developer, just give your inputs and listen to their final thoughts as they are the experts.
