Of course, the list has to start with Yerevan, formerly known as Erebuni, the delightful capital of Armenia. Yerevan is the largest city in Armenia. It’s located on the sides of the Hrazdan River with a population of 1 million inhabitants. Due to its location on the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and close to the lucrative Silk Road, Yerevan used to be a transit route for various trade projects.Today, Yerevan has many exciting activities to offer visitors. It’s an active city full of attractions, historical sights, dressy nightlife, and delicious restaurants.
The Temple of Garni is located in the Kotayk region, it’s known for its unique basalt columns. The temple is famous for its historical and architectural monuments of the Hellenistic era. Today it is one of the most popular visited place in Armenia and annually visited over 200.000 tourists.
Sevan is an incredibly popular destination amongst both locals and tourists. Sevan is one of the largest lakes in the world, 1900 meters above sea level. There you will also admire the beauty of Sevanavank monastery, that was built in the 9th century. The church was constructed from black tuff, which is the reason for the monastery named “The Black Monastery”. There are many activities to do like surfing, skiing, diving or swimming.
Dilijan “Little Switzerland”
Dilijan is a popular spa town, about 100 km from Yerevan, situated in the Dilijan National Park. Locals sometimes called it Little Switzerland due to its forests. It’s the perfect place for those looking for travel back in time and enjoy the architecture of the Middle Ages. Hiking, mountain biking, and picnicking are popular activities in Dilijan.
Monasteries are a symbol of Armenia and the example at Noravank is one of the most beautiful in the whole country. If you should choose only one monastery during your trip to Armenia, Noravank would be an extremely good selection. On the way to Noravank, you will feel quietness and isolation from the entire world.
You haven’t witnessed the soul of Armenia if you are not visited one of its oldest towns – Gyumri. The city is located in Shirak region and second-largest city of Armenia. Gyumri is one of the best places to visit in Armenia.
Syunik region is considered to be the most visited destination for tourists due to its amazing nature. One of the most attractive Monastery Tatev is located there and it is the cultural center of Armenia. There you can admire strong fortress walls upon massive cliffs. Tatev Monastery complex was included in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 1995.
Monastery KhorVirap is located in Vedi village, at a distance of 44km from Yerevan. According to the chronicles of Agatangelo, king Trdat 3th threw Gregory the Enlightener into the pit where Gregory was left for 13 years. Every day he was throwing bread into the pit. King Trdat got the freedom of st. Gregory because he saved the king from an incurable disease. After that, in 301 declared Christianity as the official in Armenia. In 642 king founded Sent Gregory church named after Sent Gregory and in honor of him. Started from the 13th century, the monastery turned into a cultural and educational center. Now the monastery is one of the most popular attractions.
