How to Teach English Overseas and Travel the World

It is always a great honor when you can combine the love you have towards traveling and the pleasure that your job gives you. Unfortunately, not everyone can combine these two, but if you are lucky enough, or perhaps if you think just a little bit more out of the box, you can create amazing working opportunities abroad. Being an English teacher is one of the professions that many seek nowadays, not only because of its interesting nature and the possibility of working with the age group that you want to work with, but also because of the fact that it is the same all around the world, so you can work and travel at the same time. Take a look at some of the ideas that will help you decide on your next destination and how to find a job as an English teacher there:

Have experience

Of course, just like most jobs in the world, being an English teacher also requires some sort of experience. Even though you will be able to find a job as an English teacher without experience in your own country, it is very much recommended to actually have some experience prior to trying to find a job overseas. This does not have to be anything serious though – working at a school or giving individual classes or tutoring a certain group of people is enough. You will need this only because of the fact that you want to differentiate yourself just a little bit, and showing that you have actually worked in the field before will give you some sort of an advantage compared to other candidates for the job.

How to find the perfect job

Next up, you might want to think about what kind of job you would actually want to do. You will be teaching English, of course, but to whom? Who will be your age group? Do you want to teach kids, teenagers or adults? Based on this question, you will have your answer to where to look for a job. Bear in mind that in some countries you will not be able to teach without a TEFL certificate. If you’re good at your job, then obtaining this certificate should come as no problem. The good thing is that you will be able to find good courses anywhere you go, so taking TEFL courses in Hong Kong, for example, is actually a possibility, and a good one for a matter of fact as this is a good place to teach English. Even if you do not opt for Hong Kong, you will have the option of finding good centers that provide this as well.

What countries to go to

As far as the countries are concerned, the best option would be to go with some exotic Asian countries, as they are currently looking for plenty of English teachers. If you go with a country that is developed in the English-speaking way, such as countries of Europe, you will need more credentials than you might possibly have as you will have to have better skills than their residents. Teaching English in Hong Kong as already mentioned, China, Japan or Thailand are very popular options, as these countries do not only provide great fun, amazing scenery and interesting culture, but good working opportunities for English teachers as well.

How to make your classes interesting

Try to think about their own culture. If you are an English teacher, then you probably have your own way of teaching. But not every culture is the same, so you will have to think about it. For example, if you opt to teach someplace in the Middle East, such as Dubai or Kuwait, you will have to think about what is illegal there and to what extent you can talk about the issue of boys and girls, not to mention homosexuality. If you move to Asia for example, you will also have to think about the personal info you should and shouldn’t ask your students. Familiarize yourself with the culture of the country you are going to work in and create classes around that. You will have plenty of possibilities of creating interesting topics and lessons based on what they do not know about the country/part of the world you are from.

Going abroad to work as an English teacher can be a lot of fun. Not only that, but it can be a completely new and unique experience, a way for you to learn more about other countries, people and cultures by teaching the English one. This is why you should at least try it for a year and see how it works for you. Perhaps traveling and teaching English is the job of your dreams.
