How to Stop Windows 10 From Automatically Downloading & Installing Updates?

Windows 10 always download and install cumulative updates on the computer as they are available and ready for your device. This approach of update downloading makes your device perform better and secured from the threats. Most of these updates contain patches, performance, stability, improvements, and occasionally new features.

It all seems well and good and less intrusive, but most of the time, users are required to restart their devices to apply the updates to the system. And the restart can cause problems to the user, and the experience of using windows affects negatively.

Well, what if we tell you that you can regain control of the updates and stop them from automatically downloading on your computer. It is possible, and we will help you in disabling the automatic updates on your computer, whatever may be the reason behind that.

We’ll walk you through the steps to disable windows update from automatically downloading and installing.

Well, there are many options when it comes to stop Windows 10 updates. You can pause them for a temporary basis and then install them at your time of convenience.

Stop Windows 10 from updating temporarily

It will postpone the updates to a later date, but you’ll have to install them anyhow. Here are the steps to postpone the updates on windows 10:

  • Click on the Start Menu and then tap Settings
  • Now, look for update and Security and tap on it
  • Now, navigate to the Windows Update option from the left panel
  • You’ll have to select Advanced options from the next window and then look for the Pause Updates section.
  • You’ll have to select a date to temporarily pause the updates coming to the system from the drop-down menu.

Once you’ve selected a date, the computer won’t download and install any updates till the specified date. And when the limit is reached, you have to install the updates before postponing again.

However, there is a way to disable automatic updates on windows 10. You can disable it using the group policy. Here are the steps:

Disable the automatic updates using Group Policy

On your Windows 10 pro version, you can disable the automatic updates on Windows 10 based computer using group policy. Here are the steps to disable windows updates using group policy:

  • First, you have to open the Run dialog, enter gpedit.msc, and hit enter to launch the group policy editor.
  • Now, you need to navigate your way to a path in the group policy editor:
    • Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update
  • Find ‘Configure Automatic Updates’ entry from the right-side panel and double click on it.
  • Check the Disabled radio button to turn off the policy from the properties window.
  • Hit the apply button on the window to save the changes and hit OK.

Once you’ve completed all these steps, your system will stop downloading and installing updates on your computer automatically. You have to go to the Windows update option in the settings for updating your computer.

If you change your mind and want to re-enable the feature on your device, change the fourth step from the above list, and select the ‘Not Configured’ option. It will restart the update feature on your Windows 10 pro device.

Apart from Group Policy editor, you can also use the registry editor to stop the automatic updates on the system. But you must research that because a wrong entry on your registry could break the system from which you cannot recover. So, be careful about the changes you make to the system without any help from professionals.
