A single Hadoop disk cluster has the capability of storing over 100 petabytes data. It does sound like a huge business, doesn’t it? The rate at which Facebook is generating data is unbelievable. The speed of ingestion through Facebook keeps accelerating and the world is getting hungry for more data.

To such a degree Facebook is using big data.

Big data, everybody’s heard about it – but how is it going to change the world? Many may say, big data is of use only to those corporations who’re able to spend millions on IT will benefit out of big data. But this is not the truth. The real fact is that it is a simple process to start taking advantage of collecting data and analyzing it to improve businesses. Perhaps many of us are already making use of it without realizing it.

According to a 2009 report by McKinsey and Co., companies having more than 1000 employees already had the data stored of their customers i.e. 200 terabytes. Consider adding this collected data to the growth of data Facebook is generating in the present times. Facebook delivers billions of likes and millions of uploaded photos within a single day. To be honest, other social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat are an addition to the data deluge.

The convergence of big data analytics across social media platforms gives birth to an entirely new stride of technology.

Origin of Facebook big data context

In the present scenario, Facebook boasts of having over 2.5 billion active users per month, a report by Statista. This platform has the capability of storing humongous amounts of data, making it a massive data storage platform. Undoubtedly, Facebook still stands to be under the top 100 companies owning a market value of approximately USD 475 billion worldwide.

Each day Facebook is being fed with heaps of information. For every 60 seconds, there are 510,000 comments posted, 293,000 updates posted, and 136,000 photos uploaded. These are mounds of information. And with data such as this, Facebook clearly can identify who your friend is, your likes, dislikes, and your activities, etc. Besides analyzing your activities, Facebook can determine user behavior through the following activities. Here are a few examples of used cases of big data analytics.

  • Facial recognition – Facebook can now easily track its users via facial recognition and image processing system. It uses the image data that is provided via user sharing.
  • Tracking cookies – For instance, if the user is logged into Facebook and yet visits other websites, it can easily track the site they have visited.
  • Analyze the likes – Facebook likes can easily make predictions regarding your sexual orientation, intelligence, emotional stability, alcohol use, drug abuse, relationship status, gender, age, race, political views, religion, and many other factors.
  • Tag suggestions – Facebook allows tagging suggestions based on facial recognition and image processing capabilities.

Another few instances showing how Facebook is using big data analytics at a larger spectrum

Let’s celebrate pride

Based on the Supreme Court’s judgment taken place on same-sex marriage as a constitutional right, Facebook took to a drenched rainbow spectacle called – Celebrate Pride showing its support toward marriage equality. In this manner, Facebook allowed its users an easy way to transform the display picture using the drenched rainbow frame. Within a few hours, millions of users changed their profile pictures with a colorful frame. This act raised multiple questions about the kind of research Facebook was conducting. Soon after a paper was published, two data scientists analyzed factors that predicted the support toward marriage equality – profiles that had the colorful frame were taken into consideration.

The flashback

After its 10th anniversary, Facebook provided its users an option of viewing and sharing videos that traced the period of their activity from the date they registered till the present called ‘flashback’. Traces of videos, pictures, and photos that received the most likes and comments were played.

Other videos included anniversary posts and birthday posts.
