Europe’s Top Destination, Lanzarote, Canary Islands

The beautiful island of Lanzarote is well known as a burst of sunshine and Europe’s top destination as it has been attracting visitors from around the world for many decades now. Its charming climate is a real reward as even if you are experiencing from the winter blues, you only have to hop aboard one of the many flights from Europe’s main airports, and chances are, four hours later you’ll be stepping off the plane into glorious sunshine of the Canary Islands.

A Top Destination For Couples, Families, And Friends

Families with children can head to one of the popular family-friendly resorts that are found all over the island. With water parks, submarine trips, a Wild West-themed zoo and the opportunity to ride a camel, it’s a struggle to fit everything into a week’s holiday on the island. Many hotels offer children’s clubs, giving parents a hard-earned rest and a chance to enjoy some vital time alone. Evening entertainment is also provided at many hotels, to keep the children busy right up to bedtime. Shopping centers, cinemas, and indoor play areas can also be found in larger resorts.

For couples and singles wanting to take in the culture of the island, there are plenty of attractions to choose from. Lanzarote was the birthplace of the artist Cesar Manrique who has left a wide variety of sights for visitors to enjoy. His magnificent home is open to the public as well as his cactus garden and a converted volcanic tube that flows into the sea. One of the main attractions on the island is the Timanfaya National Park. Lanzarote is a volcanic island and still experiences volcanic activity. 

If you’re traveling to Lanzarote with a group of friends and want to hit the casino or the dance floor, Puerto del Carmen is the resort for you. This coastal town is lined with bars and clubs where you can dance until dawn and also has a vast sandy beach to sleep off the hangover. Alternatively, if you’re visiting the island in a large family group or perhaps want a quieter break, renting a large villa in Costa Teguise is a great option. 

A much sleepier town, this tranquil bay has a small sandy beach and plenty of high-quality restaurants. Don’t forget to try papas arrugadas, a Canarian potato dish often served with chicken that never fails to please even the most discerning palette.

With a mild climate and plenty to do for holidaymakers of all ages, it is an excellent holiday destination. In the autumn, the temperature in Lanzarote ranges, on average, from 20C to 24C. Although more rain falls in the autumn than summer, this is usually limited to just one or two days per month, and the warm, welcoming sun often shines for around seven hours per day.

Mountain Biking

Fastening with the mountain tune, you could also seek your hand at mountain biking. You can either rent a bike and go off on your own short adventure on the islands many roads or even to Timanfaya National Park and if you are a real “fit,” you could also try the iron man course. This is definitely not for the faint-hearted though. Alternatively, there are various mountain biking tours to accommodate all ages and abilities, and you can even rent racing bikes on the island if you prefer sticking to the well-maintained roads.

As you can imagine, given its volcanic antiquity, it’s not unusual that the island possesses numerous peaks just waiting to be climbed by those with experience (and the appropriate travel insurance of course). You can either follow an established group or for the more experienced you could even go “freelance” and discover your own challenges. The rock formation is quite diverse and sharp in places, so make sure you are adequately equipped and wear proper clothing.

From the tops of the mountains to the bottoms of the seas now (there’s nothing like a contrast). Lanzarote is a famous diving destination as well, and as such is home to a diversity of diving schools that are both PADI and BSAC accredited for added peace of mind. 

The island has a fabulous species of marine life, and the Atlantic waters are crystal clear, so clarity is excellent. Depending on your skill level, you can go for a casual dive in the shallower waters, while those with more experience may want to try their hand at shadow diving.

On the water surface, however, water sports enthusiasts will be in their part as special from the traditional waterborne activities that you can experience in largest coastal resorts, such as speed boating, riding the waves on high-speed bananas and Ringo’s and of course snorkeling and swimming. There are a host of other things to try as well.

One of these is surfing, and if you have ever imagined trying your hand, but can’t quite bring yourself to experience the cold Europian waters. Or simply can’t afford to jet off to the Hawaiian Islands, then Lanzarote will be ideal for you. With a full host of excellent surfing beaches, big waves and excellent weather, there is absolutely no excuse not to take to the boards.

Alternatively, Lanzarote is home to some kite surfing schools too. Kite surfing will surely take your breath away as you could end up spending as much time in the air as skimming the waves at breathtaking and exhilarating speeds.
